Production Optimization

OGDCL has launched a focused production enhancement initiative to address geological challenges and curb natural production decline in aging fields. A dedicated Working Group, comprising experts from the Production, Reservoir, Exploration, and Facilities departments, leads this effort. Their mission is to identify and implement advanced technologies to boost oil and gas production from brown and depleted fields, in line with global standards.

The strategy begins with a thorough review of field data to identify improvement opportunities. Key measures include converting candidate wells to artificial lift systems and supporting them with a robust pressure maintenance mechanism. Infill drilling, surface facility optimization, advanced stimulation techniques, and innovative chemical solutions are also planned to maximize recovery. This holistic approach aims for both immediate production gains and long-term sustainability, with early successes already yielding significant enhancements in targeted fields.

Tight Gas Initiative

OGDCL has commenced early commercial production from its first-ever tight gas discovery at the Nur West-1 well, located in Sujawal, Sindh Province. In line with the Tight Gas Exploration & Production Policy 2024, OGDCL has successfully integrated Nur West-1 into production on a fast-track basis. The well currently delivers 1.5 MMSCFD of gas at a wellhead flowing pressure of 1050 PSI, sourced from the Lower Guru formation (‘A’ Sand). OGDCL holds 100% working interest as the operator of the Nur D&PL.
As part of its comprehensive Tight Gas exploration and development roadmap, OGDCL is implementing hydraulic fracturing techniques to extract gas from tight rock formations. These efforts aim to enhance the recovery of gas from challenging reservoirs. Additionally, OGDCL plans to conduct a comprehensive study of the Indus Basin to better understand its geological characteristics, identify potential tight gas reserves, and assess the economic feasibility of extracting these resources. 

Shale Gas Initiative

International shale gas plays have become a significant energy resource due to advancements in extraction technology, which have made it economically viable and influenced global energy markets, especially in the United States. As conventional reservoirs decline and the burden of petroleum imports increases, the Government of Pakistan has stressed the importance of exploring and developing unconventional hydrocarbon resources, including shale gas and tight gas. 
OGDCL has drilled its first dedicated shale gas well, KUC-1 (Vertical), in the Kunnar M.L area. The primary goal of this pilot well is to assess the shale gas potential of the Sembar Formation in the Kunnar-Pasakhi region. The hydraulic fracturing of Stage-1 was successfully completed, yielding positive results from the gas shales reservoir. Subsequent fracturing stages, including the main fracturing operations at Stage-2 and Stage-3, were also successfully executed.
